The Importance of First Aid at Work Training (FAW) – General FAQs

When it comes to maintaining a safe and healthy environment in the workplace, first aid training is paramount. To comply with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) under the First Aid Regulations 1981 Safety Regulations, it is imperative that every workplace is required to provide suitable first aid equipment, facilities, and fully qualified first aider at work personnel, ensuring that immediate assistance can be provided to employees if they are injured or become ill at work. This makes first aid at work training essential for businesses of all sizes and across all sectors.

Our First Aid at Work course is designed to meet the HSE First Aid requirements and goes beyond just ticking the compliance boxes. It equips attendees with the knowledge and skills to administer a wide variety of first aid techniques in the workplace with confidence – from treating minor wounds to saving the lives of colleagues in life-threatening situations.

Choosing the Right First Aid Training Qualification – is the Emergency First Aid at Work Course (EFAW) 1 day course enough?

Choosing the right training is critical for the wellbeing of your organisation, as you are faced with multiple options, matching multiple workplace environments. In order to determine the most suitable first aid training, we would highly recommend to conduct a thorough first-aid needs assessment in accordance with the Health and Safety Executive’s approved code of practice.

While the one day Emergency First Aid course (EFAW) may be sufficient for low-risk environments, it fails to ensure that you are equipped with the knowledge and necessary first aid skills needed to respond effectively to a range of common emergencies. For example, unlike the course which takes one day to complete, the 3 day course includes advanced first aid techniques, such as the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). Therefore, the three day course would be strongly recommended to candidates wishing to gain the skills and confidence to respond swiftly should they need to provide first aid to casualties with burns, scalds, or injuries caused by electricity.

As such, the 3-day First Aid at Work (FAW) course is suitable for those who work in a high risk environment, being highly interactive and covering a wide variety of first aid techniques, including CPR and how to deal with heart attacks, head injuries, fractures, and other serious conditions.

The First Aid Course – Contents and Structure

Our first aid at work training is meticulously designed to provide the knowledge and skills necessary to manage a variety of emergency situations. The course covers the role of the first aider, health and safety regulations,  the recognition and treatment of conditions from minor injuries to life-threatening emergencies.

As part of the course, trainees will learn how to assess an emergency situation, provide CPR, treat burns, control bleeding, and manage unconscious casualties. The importance of keeping an up-to-date first aid kit in the workplace and its proper usage is also covered.

Recognition and Certification

Upon successful completion of our first aid at work training courses, participants will receive an HSE approved and nationally recognised first aid at work certificate which is valid for three years from the date of issue.

One of the major features of our First Aid at Work course is the Level 3 RQF accreditation. This ensures that our course does not only meet the requirements, but also exceeds the HSE’s recommendations for First Aid Training in the Workplace. This Level 3 course offers a deeper insight into first aid procedures and techniques, making it suitable for people working in high-risk environments where the needs assessment has identified the necessity for more advanced skills.

Requalification and Refresher of your suitable skills for your organisationțs First Aid needs

In order to maintain the competency of first aiders, the HSE recommends a yearly ‘refresher’ training, which we provide. As the skills and knowledge can fade over time, these refresher courses are important to ensure that candidates are still able to recognise symptoms and administer the appropriate treatment.

After the successfully completing the course, each participant will be awarded a first aid certificate. This certificate is valid for 3 years, after which the first aider will need to complete a requalification course. The requalification process ensures that responders are always up-to-date with their training and that your organisation maintains compliance.

We also provide a 2-day requalification course for those who already have a valid first aid at work certificate and need to renew their qualification. In accordance with the guidance, requalification should be completed within a three-month period prior to the expiry date of your current certificate.
